Everything Needed to Verify a Mobile Driver's Licence
Shufti Confirms Each mDL Is Real
Reads the digital signature, not a photo
Instead of scanning a picture of a licence, Shufti checks the secure digital signature the issuing state adds to every mDL. That is far harder to fake than a photo.
Spots any tampering instantly
If someone changes even one detail, the signature no longer matches and Shufti rejects it. A genuine mDL only works with the real owner's own phone and face.
Shufti Works With Every Major Wallet
Apple, Google, and EU wallets
Shufti verifies mDLs held in Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and the EU's EUDI Wallet. Whichever wallet a customer uses, one setup handles it.
Ready for Europe too
US and EU wallets use the same underlying format, so building for one automatically covers the other. No extra work when the new EU rules take effect.
Shufti Shares Only What You Ask For
Just the answer, nothing extra
Need to check someone is over 21? Shufti reads just that one field from the mDL and returns a simple yes or no. It never passes on their birth date, home address, or licence number.
Less personal data to protect
Because customers share only one detail, your business stores far less sensitive information. That keeps you on the right side of privacy rules like GDPR.
Shufti Ties Each mDL to One Phone
Cannot be copied or shared
An mDL is locked to the phone it was issued on. It cannot be screenshotted, forwarded, or used from anyone else's device.
Stolen copies simply fail
If a fraudster tries to use the mDL from another phone, Shufti rejects it automatically. The protection is built into the phone's hardware, not just the rules.
Shufti Verifies Everyone, Wallet or Not
No mDL? No problem
If a customer does not have an mDL yet, Shufti automatically switches to scanning their physical passport or ID card. It covers any government-issued document across 240+ regions.
One setup covers both
Wallet users and document users flow through the same setup and come back in one simple format. Nobody gets stuck, and you build it only once.

What Procurement Teams Ask
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mobile driver's licence?
A mobile driver's licence (mDL) is a government-issued digital credential stored in a smartphone wallet: Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or an EU EUDI Wallet. It is cryptographically signed by the issuing authority and bound to the user's device via the Secure Enclave. As of mid-2026, 21 US states have live mDL programmes.
How is mDL verification different from traditional document OCR?
OCR reads a photograph and extracts text, a process defeatable by high-quality forgeries or AI-generated documents. mDL verification reads a cryptographically signed credential and validates each field against the issuing authority's digital signature. A valid mDL cannot be forged without the user's device and biometric authentication.
What happens if a user does not have a mobile driver's licence?
Shufti's hybrid flow routes users without a digital wallet through the physical document path, covering any government-issued document type across 240+ regions. The routing is handled automatically within the integration; no separate logic is required. Every user completes verification regardless of whether mDL is available in their state.
What does selective disclosure mean for GDPR compliance?
Selective disclosure lets the verifier request only the minimum data elements required. A flow requesting age_over_21 receives a boolean, not a full date of birth or home address. This directly supports GDPR Article 5(1)(c) data minimisation and reduces the PII surface area held by the verifying organisation.
What eIDAS 2.0 deadlines apply?
EU member states must issue EUDI Wallets by December 2026. Regulated private-sector entities in financial services, travel, and telecommunications must accept EUDI Wallet credentials by December 2027, with penalties up to €5 million per infringement. The EUDI Wallet uses the same ISO 18013-5 mdoc format as US mDLs, so a single integration covers both jurisdictions.
What security certifications cover the mDL verification flow?
The biometric component is covered by Shufti's iBeta Level 3 PAD certification (0% APCER / 0% BPCER, May 2026). The overall platform carries SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, PCI DSS Level 1, and GDPR compliance.
How long does integration take?
The mDL endpoint extends Shufti's existing identity verification API. Organisations already integrated for physical document verification do not require a new build. The same webhook delivers results from both mDL and physical document paths. A sandbox environment is available for pre-production testing at no additional cost.
Evaluate Whether Your Verification Stack Covers MDL
mDL adoption is live across 21 US states. EU mandates arrive December 2027. The earlier you integrate, the less you are doing it under pressure.
