PayPal Announces Suspension of UK Crypto Purchases from October

PayPal Announces Suspension of UK Crypto Purchases from October
R Richard M. AUGUST 18, 2023 1 minute read

PayPal announced a temporary ban on UK cryptocurrency purchases, demonstrating their swift compliance with the updated crypto regulations of the nation.

Following UK’s amendments in the financial regulations regarding crypto, PayPal has decided to hit a pause on crypto purchases in the country. Once this change becomes effective starting from 1st October 2023, residents of the UK will no longer be able to buy cryptocurrencies. The online payment platform, PayPal, further clarified that the ban is not of a permanent nature. Rather, customers can expect the reactivation of the services in early 2024.

This move showcases PayPal’s position to stand in compliance with the amended crypto regulations put forth by the country’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). The changed rules require cryptocurrency firms to enhance their customer verification and scrutiny processes before a customer is allowed to purchase a digital currency.

To clarify its stance on compliance with these regulations, PayPal maintains that the platform will only pause the purchase of digital assets. Customers are free to conduct crypto sales on the platform, as usual.

Previously, the government of the UK announced plans to enforce the “Travel Rule” to maintain transparency and security in the crypto landscape. The timing of purchase regulations coincides with the suspension of crypto purchases, further underscoring UK’s commitment to curbing money laundering via digital assets.
